From the woods west of East Cowes Castle, the full moon rises over its towers. A pale couple apparently embracing in the right foreground are of the sort Finberg dubbed ‘lovers’ in similar studies;1 see under Tate D20809 (Turner Bequest CCXXVII a 6). The heavy, looping pen work may suggest other figures among the foliage nearby.
This is among dozens of blue paper studies made in and around East Cowes Castle, presumably in the course of a single visit. For more on the various aspects of the house (demolished in about 1950), and its lost grounds as depicted by Turner, see the Introduction to this subsection.

Technical notes:
The horizontal smearing and streaking of ink to the left of the centre and towards the top right appears to be accidental, and to have occurred as it dried rather than as a result of subsequent damage.
