These two swiftly rendered views show coastline with shipping; the location may be Portsmouth or Brighton. They are connected to sketches showing coastal and harbour scenes which reminded Turner of Claude Lorrain’s marine landscapes at sunrise (Tate D18328–D18329, D18330; Turner Bequest CCX 10a–11, 12).
