Here Turner has rendered two cursory views: the uppermost depicts shipping navigating the waters near a harbour at sunrise, the lowermost shows a tower on the coast. The location may be Brighton or Portsmouth.
The artist has inscribed ‘Claude [?Morning]’ directly below the marine view. This is a reference to Claude Lorrain, the French seventeenth-century landscape painter from whom Turner derived much inspiration. See also Tate D18328–D18330; Turner Bequest CCX 11–12.
