This view of the Burg Landshut is taken from an entirely different perspective from Tate D20178, D20181, D20182; Turner Bequest CCXIX 17, 20, 21. Drawing from the Moselle itself, in the foreground Turner records some of the vessels and light craft that ply its waters, also incorporating a few figures going about their daily business at the river’s edge.
This drawing and others in the 1824 sketchbooks are related to a highly finished watercolour of the town and its castle produced in around 1830; see Tate D19757–D19760, D20176–D20178, D20180–D20181; Turner Bequest CCXVI 104a–106, CCXIX 15–17, 19–20.1
