Having hiked further into the hills above Pallien, Turner has recorded a view of the northern edge of Trier (at in the middle distance and at right). The architecture of the city is highlighted with flecks and soft hatches of chalk and the foreground, rendered in pencil, reveals the rubble and shrubbery of the hillside. The view also incorporates the Weisshaus (White House), a neo-classical mansion overlooking the banks of the Moselle. Built as a small farm cottage in the seventeenth century, a grand villa was constructed on these foundations a year before Turner’s visit in 1823.1
Turner took a similar view to this in a sketchbook belonging to the 1839 tour of the Meuse-Moselle region (see Tate D28255; Turner Bequest CCLXXXVIII 49a).
