This is a general view of Spofforth Church, village and Castle from the north-west, with a separate detail of the church tower, made from closer and slightly further to the north, above. The sketch was made as Turner set out from Spofforth to Plompton Rocks, the subject of sketches running on from the verso (D10873). Folio 6 verso in this sketchbook (D10879) has a still more distant view of the same aspect of Spofforth, presumably made on the return journey.
For general notes on Spofforth in this sketchbook see D10869; Turner Bequest CXLV 1a.
