Thornton Force is on the River Twiss about a mile north of Ingleton, and can be approached from Ingleton by a well-made path up the very picturesque Swilla Glen. Turner visited the site towards the end of his tour and this sketch must have been one of the last to be made in this book.
Technical notes:
When Finberg catalogued the sketchbook in 1909 the sketch was correctly bound in the book as folio 1 verso. It was subsequently reversed in error and stamped as the recto, but has since been restored to its original orientation (see notes to D11442).
