Comparison with the subject of folio 4 (D14150), suggests that this sketch depicts the ruined medieval castle at San Giorio di Susa,1 a small town in the Susa valley that Turner passed through on his way to Turin at the start of his 1819 Italian tour. The castle is located on a hill to the east of the town and is the most visible landmark in this part of the valley.
