The subject is taken from a drawing by John Robert Cozens (1752–1797) in Beckford Sketchbook I, p.4, titled ‘Upon the River Inn in the Tirol’ and dated ‘June 5 [1782]’ (Whitworth Art Gallery, Manchester, D1975.4.4).1
