Turner made the three sketches on this page as the boat he was travelling on crossed the Sound of Sleat on its approach to Ardvasar on Skye. At the top of the page is a view looking north along the coast of Armadale, between the Aird of Sleat and Ardvasar. Beneath this is a sketch looking in the opposite direction: south along the Armadale coastline with the island of Rum emerging behind the Point of Sleat at the south of Skye, and with the Isle of Eigg to the left. Beneath this Turner’s final sketch on the page, inscribed ‘Cul’ and ‘Point of Slate’, depicts the Cuillin mountain range to the west with the Point of Sleat in the foreground.1
