Turner Bequest CXXVII 5
Pencil on white wove paper, 126 x 202 mm
Inscribed by Turner in pencil ‘Sand’ towards bottom centre, and apparently with numbers on the mountains at the centre (see main catalogue entry)
Inscribed by John Ruskin in red ink ‘5’ bottom right
Stamped in black ‘CXXVII 5’ bottom right

Accepted by the nation as part of the Turner Bequest 1856
Turner’s view is possibly from Duddon Sands, near Millom (see D08975, D08976, D08978, D08998, D09001; CXXVII 9, 9a, 11, 23a, 25a), now in Cumbria, looking north to the mountains on the south-western edge of the Lake District. There appear to be the numbers ‘3’, ‘5’, ‘4’, ‘2’ and ‘1’ inscribed from left to right on the distant mountains, possibly to show their relative positions, nearest (‘5’) to furthest (‘1’) from the viewer, or to indicate their relative tones. If the identification is correct, the sketch must date from 1809 by association with the Millom views. For other identified or likely Cumbrian subjects, see under D08965 (CXXVII 1).
Technical notes:
This page is a face of one of the loose bifolio sheets which form the majority of the so-called Sandycombe and Yorkshire sketchbook, along with a few single leaves. The sheets were not bound, but folded inside each other in a sequence which is not entirely recoverable (see the sketchbook’s Introduction for a suggested order). When unfolded, this page is continuous with D08974 (CXXVII 8a); the measurements given above are for the present work alone.
