Across this page and folio 17 (D25670) is a view of Newark Castle near Selkirk from across the Yarrow Water to the north. Turner made similar views at the same time in the Abbotsford sketchbook (Tate D26066; Turner Bequest CCLXVII 79), one of which became the basis for his watercolour Newark Castle circa 1832 (private collection)1 that was engraved for Sir Walter Scott’s Poetical Works.
Turner made another sketch of Newark on folio 16 (D25668), and in the Abbotsford sketchbook (Tate D26066; Turner Bequest CCLXVII 79). In 1834 he returned to the castle, making sketches in the Edinburgh sketchbook (Tate D26167; Turner Bequest CCLXVIII 37a).
