This sketch of a female performer is one of several in Tate Archive that depict people in the café, Vernet’s, on the Quai Henry IV in Dieppe. Wendy Baron notes that at this time Sickert frequented the café every evening before the casino opened at midnight, sketching the performers and audience members. As with other sketches from this series (TGA 8120/3/38–44), Sickert has drawn in an account book, and subsequently torn the page out. The drawing is referenced in Wendy Baron, Sickert: Paintings and Drawings, New Haven and London 2006, no.583.20.
