Oil on canvas 80 × 76 (2032 × 1930)
Inscribed on back of canvas ‘Haytor Quarry/1981 80" × 76"’ and ‘John Hubbard’
Purchased from Fischer Fine Art (Grant-in-Aid) 1982
Haytor is on Dartmoor, and Hubbard visited the granite quarry near there frequently from the late 1960s. In the late 1970s he made a series of charcoal drawings in the quarry of the rock faces, and some studies in oil on paper derived from these were exhibited at Fischer Fine Art in 1979. The Tate Gallery's is the latest of his oil paintings of the same subject. It was begun in London, but worked on again when it had been moved to his studio in Chilcombe, Dorset, where the light was better. The artist wrote of it (letter of 2 March 1982):
I consider this to be a sort of culmination of the numerous drawings and oils on both paper and canvas based on the disused Haytor quarry. The shapes are more directly based on those of the quarry than in other works, but the colour is subjective, intended to suggest the quarry's sombre presence.
