This is an enlarged version of the 'Spheric Theme' which had interested Gabo since 1936-7 (see the note on T02173). It is a unique piece, but was followed some years later by five versions of monumental proportions, each about 250cm high. The first, made for the Munch-Museet in Oslo, is in architectural steel, with stainless steel springs. The others are all in stainless steel and belong (in the order they were made) to the Nationalgalerie, Berlin; New York State, Albany, New York; Princeton University, Princeton, New Jersey; and Mrs. Gabo.
