The Snail 1953
L'Escargot
Chosen by David Adjaye - "Completed late in his career, for me this picture epitomises the power of abstraction to communicate sophisticated and nuanced observations about our lives and what kind of world we live in. Composition which seems random and unintentional is highly composed and rhythmic, the colour spectrum is somehow perfect and the playfulness of the overall arrangement begs questions the more you look at it. It’s a work that I never get tired of looking at it."
