Tate Departments
As well as the individual curatorial and learning departments at each of the four gallery sites, Tate is administered by a series of umbrella departments responsible for Tate-wide activities such as overall management and finances.
In addition, Tate Liverpool and Tate St Ives operate their own Visitor Services, Communications and Development departments.
Tate-wide Departments
Director's Office
The Director's Office provides ongoing support to the Director, Deputy Director, Chairman and Board of Trustees. The Director's Office is comprised of Strategy and Policy, Corporate Governance, External Relations, and Administration.
Tate National
Tate National supports both national and international strategies, including Tate-wide research and education programmes. It also links the work of Tate Liverpool and Tate St Ives as part of Tate's commitment to Britain beyond the Capital.
Transforming Tate Modern Project Team
Tate is planning a major capital project, Transforming Tate Modern, which will add further space to the existing galleries and facilities of Tate Modern. This proposed investment, coupled with Tate Modern's phenomenal success to date, will transform the gallery, creating an unparalleled platform for engagement with modern and contemporary art. The development will also create an urban park at the heart of London's cultural quarter.
Development
The Development division is responsible for all the fundraising activities at Tate. It comprises Corporate Support, Corporate Events, Trusts and Public Sector, Individual Giving and Operations teams, as well as the US Development Office and the Tate Foundation. The Development department works with a wide range of other Tate departments and sites to optimise funds from individuals, companies, trusts and public sector funders in support of Tate programmes, collection and buildings.
Tate Media
The Tate Media division operates across multiple media platforms to maximise the reach of all Tate’s programmes and resources. It comprises four departments: Tate Online, Tate Media Productions, Communications (Press, Marketing and Design), and Membership and Ticketing Services.
The division includes digital/online, TV, magazine publishing, as well as major public events programmes. It is responsible for developing and guiding Tate's communication strategy through brand guardianship, media relations, marketing, membership, advocacy, market research and audience development.
Collection Care
The objectives of the Collection Care division are to care for, store and record the Collection (including the archive); manage the Collection's movement and use; support and deliver Tate's programme (exhibitions, displays, touring exhibitions, loans, publications); build the Library and Archive collections; and provide public access and visitor services to the Collection, Library and Archive. It is comprised of the Art Services, Library and Archive and Conservation departments.
Finance
The Finance Division ensures that Tate's finances are efficiently and effectively managed through providing proactive financial management support to the Board, its committees and management. It also makes sure that Tate complies with relevant legislative and administrative requirements given Tate's status as a NDPB, and provides a reliable and efficient finance system to all Tate entities.
Visitor Services and Estates
The Visitor Services and Estates division works to enable all our visitors to explore, experience and enjoy our sites by providing an exceptional service to people in a welcoming environment. It is also responsible for the safety and security of people and the Collection, as well as for developing and maintaining Tate's buildings and facilities.
Human Resources
People are central to the way Tate operates. The Human Resources department is responsible for ensuring effective Human Resources services and instigating policies and procedures that meet Tate's overall objectives and the needs of management and staff at all levels. It aims to provide support for the continuous development of Tate’s people and to develop a culture and ways of working that promote equality and respect diversity.
Other Resources Functions
The IT and Legal functions play a vital role in providing information technology throughout all Tate sites, and legal advice on activities, freedom of information and capital programmes.
Tate Enterprises Limited
Tate Enterprises Limited is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Tate. Its principal activities comprise the management and operation of restaurants, cafés and ancillary services for the benefit of visitors to Tate's galleries, and the publishing and sale of books and other products and merchandise associated with the Collection and Tate activities.
Tate Britain

The Curatorial department at Tate Britain is responsible for the programme of exhibitions and collection displays of British art from around 1500 to the present day, and for researching and building, through purchase and gift, Tate's Collection of British art.
Learning at Tate Britain
Tate Britain Learning department develops education programmes, events, professional development training, learning resources and interpretation which aim to widen participation in the arts.
Tate Modern
Curatorial Department at Tate Modern
The Curatorial department at Tate Modern is responsible for the programme of exhibitions and collection displays of international modern and contemporary art from around 1900 to the present day, and for researching and building, through purchase or gift, Tate's Collection of international art.
Learning at Tate Modern
Tate Modern Learning department develops programmes of education, events, professional development training, learning resources and interpretation which aim to widen participation in the arts.
Tate Liverpool
Curatorial Department at Tate Liverpool
The Curatorial department at Tate Liverpool is responsible for the programme of exhibitions and displays covering British and international art from around 1900 to the present day, although on occasion pre-1900 works that are considered to have contemporary relevance may be included.
Learning at Tate Liverpool
Tate Liverpool Learning department develops programmes of education, events, professional development training, learning resources and interpretation which aim to widen participation in the arts.
Visitor Services and Operations at Tate Liverpool
The Visitor Services and Operations department works to optimise the visitor experience through the quality of its services and to ensure a safe, secure and relaxed environment in the Tate Liverpool building for the enjoyment of the public and staff.
Communications at Tate Liverpool
Tate Liverpool Communications and Publishing department produces public interpretation for all exhibitions and displays. It publishes Tate Liverpool programmes and co-publishes its catalogues. It supports Tate Catering in achieving its trading targets and commissions audience research, disseminating its results across the gallery.
Development at Tate Liverpool
The Development department works to secure maximum income, through increasing Tate Liverpool membership and event organisation, as well as progressing in high-level relationship management and donor-care system.
Tate St Ives
Curatorial Department at Tate St Ives
The Curatorial department at Tate St Ives organises the exhibitions and displays programme at Tate St Ives, covering major and emerging figures in British and international art through its exhibition and residency programmes. It also delivers displays and research with a special emphasis on the St Ives School of Modernists.
Learning at Tate St Ives
Tate St Ives Learning department develops programmes of education, events, professional development training, learning resources and interpretation linked to Tate St Ives exhibitions and the Barbara Hepworth Museum and Sculpture Garden. It caters for all audience sectors including families, young people, schools & colleges and the community.
Visitor Services and Operations
The Tate St Ives Visitor Services and Operations department works to optimize the visitor experience through the quality of its services and ensure a safe and relaxed environment at Tate St Ives.
Communications at Tate St Ives
Tate St Ives Communications team is responsible for marketing and audience research, press and publicity, Tate St Ives membership scheme and internal communications, as well as assisting with all aspects of publishing prints and catalogues.
Development at Tate St Ives
The Development department secures funds from individuals, companies, trusts and public sector funders in support of Tate St Ives' exhibition, education and community programmes and the Tate St Ives: Phase Two capital project.
