Gabriel Orozco, Carambole with Pendulum

Tate © Gabriel Orozco

Gabriel Orozco's work investigates the poetic and political potential of objects. Carambole with Pendulum consists of an oval billiard table on which rest two white balls. A third, red, ball, is suspended from the ceiling above the table like a pendulum and sways in a figure-of-eight motion when hit. The table's oval shape and lack of pockets deny the traditional function of a games table while drawing attention to its visual qualities. The abstract movements of the balls on and above the table can be viewed as suggesting the circulation of people, information and commodities in the social and political economy.
