Jeremy Deller

Biography

Jeremy Deller is a widely exhibited artist who lives and works in London. He studied at the Courtauld Institute of Art, and now acts as a curator, producer or director of a broad range of projects, including orchestrated events, films and publications. Much of his work involves collaboration with individuals and groups, often taking folk culture as its raw material, with the aim of drawing attention to activity taking place outside what is conventionally thought of as the contemporary art world. He has been a Board Member of Artangel, since 2005. He sits on the Collection Committee and the Tate Liverpool Council.

Why I wanted to become a Tate Trustee

I accepted the trusteeship because I'm interested in the role that Museums and art play in the cultural and social life of the UK and Tate's role in this, especially as a champion of Modern and Contemporary Art.

Exhibited in the Turner Prize Retrospective Exhibition, Tate Britain (2 October 2007 - 6 January 2008), as a former Turner Prize Winner. This was noted at the September 2007 Board.

The work The Battle of Orgreave Archive (An Injury to One is an Injury to All) (2004) was included in The World as a Stage Exhibition at Tate Modern (24 October 2007 - 1 January 2008), the involvement was noted at the May 2007 Board, and in my Register of Interests 06/07.

The potential gift by a private Foundation of one of my works was discussed at the September 2007 Board meeting. The Charity Commission was consulted, and their advice followed. I absented myself from the discussion. No firm offer of this work has been forthcoming, and no acquisition procedures have taken place.

Signed and Dated by Jeremy Deller on 3 April 2008.
